Why Trim My Trees?
There are several reasons why tree trimming is done.
1) To cut away branches that may be infringing on house, rubbing against the roof, gutters, windows, etc.
2) To remove dead or decaying limbs and branches. Limbs can grow to be quite heavy, and pose a potential danger if they come loose and fall on property or people.
3) To create a better frame and structure of the tree, which will help it to weather storms more efficiently.
4) To remove branches that have become diseased or infected with insects, as this can spread to other healthy branches.
5) To thin out overcrowded patches in the crown. If growth becomes too thick at the top, the bottom branches can be deprived of necessary air and sunlight. Thinning allows the rest of the tree to receive the proper elements that it needs to grow in a healthy way.
6) To take away “sprouts” that sometimes grow towards the bottom of the tree.
7) To remove branches that are growing into other limbs or towards the trunk of the tree.

What Is Involved in Tree Trimming?
When we come out to do some tree trimming, or tree pruning for you, here are a few of the techniques we may use:
1) Thinning. This is one of the most frequently requested trimming services here in Gretna.
Wikepeida gives a pretty concise definition of this process: “Thinning is a term used in agricultural sciences to mean the removal of some plants, or parts of plants, to make room for the growth of others.”
In other words, we are not allowing the upper parts of the tree to “hog” all the nutrients like air and sunlight. This allows the tree to “breathe”.
2) Crown Shaping (also called Crown Reduction). This pruning technique is mostly for hardwoods, and is used to carefully select branches that need removal, in order to bring more light and air to the rest of the tree.
3) Crown Raising. Crown raising is a popular tree trimming technique, because it removes branches that are hanging too low. Often, limbs can start growing too low, touching down on furniture or people, and becoming a nuisance. In these cases, we simply trim the low hanging branches.
4) Dead Pruning. When a branch dies, it really should be cut down and removed, because it can easily break off and do damage to property or people below. Dead pruning is the technique of pruning the branch right at the point where it has died, being careful not to cut into the living part of the tree.
To do tree pruning property, you don’t just need the right equipment. You also should have a strong working knowledge of trees in general, what needs to be done - when and how; you should understand how to in a way that will help, and not damage the tree.
Here at Gretna Trees, we all the right tools, and more importantly, the right experience to get the job done for you in a way that you will love. We are very good at what we do and would be happy to come look at any tree that you have that may need trimming or pruning.
